Dedicated fundraisers donate to local research

The Oak Flats Lioness Club raised just over $2,000 for pancreatic cancer research at a trivia night fundraiser held at Albion Park Bowling Club on 11 May 2019.

Over 60 attendees faced a tough quiz and competed for prizes kindly donated by a range of local businesses and individuals in the Albion Park and Oak Flats area.

The proceeds were donated to the research of Dr Kara Vine-Perrow and collaborators at IHMRI.

A team of IHMRI researchers and staff had an amazing time at the trivia night, finishing somewhere in the middle of the rankings.

The Oak Flats Lioness Club have raised funds for a variety of causes for over 35 years. A dedicated team of six, the Lionesses are particularly focused on supporting local charities to help people in the Illawarra. They have raised funds for IHMRI researchers in the past, including a trivia night fundraiser for the motor neurone disease research of Professor Justin Yerbury in 2018.

Their decision to raise funds for pancreatic research this year was a very personal one. Secretary of the Oak Flats Lioness Club, Robyn Clarkson, revealed:

“My best friend of 40 years was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died soon afterwards. We wanted to support pancreatic cancer research because it doesn’t get as much attention as other diseases.”

“Also, I remember Dr Kara Vine-Perrow from when I was teaching at Albion Park High School. She is a very talented scientist and she is working right here in the Illawarra,” she added.

In November, the Oak Flats Lioness Club will hold their Rubber Duck Derby on Macquarie Rivulet to raise funds for dementia research at IHMRI.
